Why Different Thinking Makes Us Better Thinkers

When most people hear the word diversity, they tend to think about policies, procedures, and compliance.

Those things matter.

But they only scratch the surface.

The real power of diversity lies in something much deeper:

different perspectives.

Every person you meet has lived a different life.

They've accumulated different experiences, different assumptions, different knowledge, and different ways of seeing the world.

And that's valuable.

Because one of the easiest traps we can fall into is surrounding ourselves with people who think exactly as we do.

It feels comfortable.

It feels efficient.

It feels reassuring.

But it can also make us blind.

Blind to opportunities.

Blind to risks.

Blind to assumptions we've stopped questioning.

That's why diversity of thought matters so much.

It's one of the richest sources of what I've been calling Productive Friction.

The challenge from a colleague.

The unexpected question from a customer.

The alternative viewpoint that forces us to reconsider our position.

These moments can feel uncomfortable.

But they're often where our best thinking begins.

As the saying goes:

If everyone is thinking the same thing, then somebody probably isn't thinking.

The organisations that thrive are rarely the ones that eliminate friction.

They're the ones that learn how to use it.

The same is true for individuals.

Growth doesn't just come from learning new things.

Sometimes it comes from encountering people who help us see old things differently.

And that's why diversity is about much more than policy.

It's about expanding the quality of our thinking.

A Thought To Leave You With

Who was the last person who genuinely challenged your assumptions?

And did you learn something from them?

Want to explore this idea further?

In this week's ThinkWORKS episode, Stimulation Through Diversity, I explore how different perspectives create better questions, better decisions, and ultimately better results.

And if you'd like the full chapter, you'll find it in my book:

You 2.0: Build Yourself Better.
